Consumers are drawn to alpaca sweaters with just one touch. Alpaca is several times stronger and much warmer than sheep’s wool. The fiber itself is semi-hollow and makes very light, thermal garments. Alpaca fiber comes in over 22 natural colors, ranging from white, fawn, through tan, red and brown, to black. Alpaca fiber is also found in several shades of gray. It blends well with other types of natural fibers. Unlike sheep's wool, alpaca fibers have a smooth shaft, a trait that reduces the prickly feel often associated with wool clothing.

Historically, alpaca production has been concentrated in the high Andes Mountains where pasture is limited. The world-wide population of alpaca is barely three million animals. As a result, alpaca is considered a specialty fiber with limited available supply. Alpaca fleece is comparable to cashmere in softness and is often mixed with other fibers, such as mohair or wool, to vary the texture of the yarn produced.

The average annual yield per animal is around 5 lbs.  Top producing animals can yield as much as 10 lbs. or more.  The first fleece or Cria fleece commands a premium because of the extra fineness.  Depending upon its weight, quality, and cleanliness, an alpaca fleece commands $200 - $600 for the “prime blanket”.  Alpaca fiber- it's like gold on padded feet!

    * Softer than cashmere
    * Naturally lustrous
    * Stronger and Warmer than wool
    * Naturally hypoallergenic (and lanolin free)
    * Lightweight, but Insulating

There are a growing number of options for processing alpaca fiber into luxurious finished products.  In addition to small fiber mills, the alpaca owner can process by hand or send the fiber to a fiber pool and purchase clothing in exchange.  As the alpaca industry matures we expect these options to increase.

We were pleased with our yarn sales at the the Barre Farmer’s Market.  We have just received another 18 skeins and we have one more lot coming.  If you are interested please call or send us an email.
